Chest Fever’s single “SUCH A NIGHT” ft. Devin Cuddy & The Blues Brothers From The 21st Century Last Waltz – Live at Massey Hall OUT NOW

Today, Chest Fever officially releases “Such A Night” ft. Devin Cuddy and The Blues Brothers, the latest single from their upcoming album The 21st Century LAST WALTZ – Live At Massey Hall. The single comes with a corresponding live music video available on Youtube. Recorded during the band's landmark performance at Toronto's legendary Massey Hall on November 18, 2023, the release continues the band's weekly rollout of singles and videos leading up to the full album's release on September 18, 2026. 

“Such a Night”, written by Lincoln Chase in the 1950s, initially began as a 1950s R&B hit. It was subsequently reinterpreted by Elvis Presley and Dr. John before becoming permanently associated with The Last Waltz with Dr. John's lively performance with The Band. Unlike some of the more thoughtful, solemn songs on the track list, “Such a Night” captures the more celebratory, loose, and fun side of the farewell concert.

On Chest Fever’s rendition, Devin Cuddy steps into the role, bringing his own roots-driven history to a song that represents one of the show’s most exuberant moments. The son of frontman Jim Cuddy of the Canadian rock band Blue Rodeo, Cuddy grew up surrounded by music, carving his own path through years of performing with The Devin Cuddy Band.

His connection to The Last Waltz goes back much further than the 2023 performance: “The Last Waltz was one of only a couple things that I remember being truly inspired by when I was younger; not just the music, but the people, the interviews, and just the way the whole thing was put together,” Cuddy says. “And it sort of spawned a long lasting enthusiasm.”

That enthusiasm took on a new meaning when he found himself onstage at Massey Hall, participating in a recreation of one of music history’s most celebrated concerts. “I remember right before we played that song [“Such A Night”], I was very nervous,” he says. “But I think it went pretty well, which made it very fun, actually.” 

The performance also features a special connection to the original The Last Waltz through legendary horn arranger and saxophonist Tom “Bones” Malone of The Blues Brothers. Malone, who played a central role in Chest Fever’s horn arrangements, takes the stage alongside his brother Blue Malone, with the two delivering saxophone solos during Chest Fever’s rendition of the song. Tom “Bones” Malone wrote the horn section in “Such A Night” for the original Last Waltz performance, making his return to the song at Massey Hall a particularly meaningful moment. His arranging legacy extends beyond The Last Waltz as well, having also written arrangements for the Saturday Night Live band.

The nerves are understandable. “Such A Night” puts a spotlight on Cuddy in particular, who sits at the piano on the left side of the stage, while the rest of Chest Fever hold down the right. As the audience claps along in unison, Cuddy tears across the keys with the same excited spirit Dr. John brought to the original performance, infusing the song with a distinctly New Orlean-style layer of funk. The result is a spirited evolution of a song that has traveled a long way since its original recording in the 1950s, carrying forward its joyous energy through the decades and into Chest Fever’s 21st-century rendition.

While the significance of the performance brought its share of pressure, Cuddy says the atmosphere ultimately made the experience unlike any other: “It was a group of people recreating a very famous night of music, and there was a really beautiful energy, both on the stage and backstage,” Cuddy recalls. “It was not your average feeling on stage, and it was very special in that way.”

That sense of shared history extended beyond the musicians; Massey Hall, one of Canada’s most storied concert venues, became part of the experience itself. “There’s a shared love of something, an individual thing that happened in that room, and on top of all that, it was at Massey Hall, which is essentially Canada’s most legendary auditorium,” Cuddy explains. “I think that the people on the stage and in the crowd both recognized that and it added to the joy and the energy that was bouncing back and forth from the crowd on the stage.”

But for Cuddy, it doesn’t matter where The Band’s music is played. The enduring connection is ultimately rooted in the music itself: “I think it’s a blend of these beautiful styles, put all together in this very sort of simple, but really unique way that I don’t think very many bands accomplish, and certainly not at that level,” he says. “I think the soul resonates because it’s authentic, it’s real, it’s immensely talented—and those things are sort of timeless.”
